Kaylin's Korner

The beginning of my internship this summer felt glamorous even though I knew it was far from it. I had tricked myself into thinking this summer was going to be my big chance to be on my own and make my own life in a new city. You can’t do that in 3 months and I really didn’t have the time to make friends outside of the internship and nannying all the time.
While most 19-year-old girls may think to intern at a news station every day during summer would be lame I could not think of a better way to spend my time. I had one of the best summers of my life this year and it is all thanks to FOX 17 and the people there that loved me and treated me like I belonged there. Even on my last day one of my bosses said thank you for interning with them and I said: “Of course, I had a lot of fun!” The man has never looked so confused in his life…. guess I am crazy but I had a blast.
The highlight of my summer was definitely meeting and getting to know Kaylin Jorge. Kaylin took me under her wing day one and taught me, step by step how to run the digital media desk. It started with me writing my first story for her then her deleting the whole thing right in front of my face to me writing stories that she wouldn’t make a single change to.
I have improved so much as a journalist this summer it blows my mind and it is all thanks to Kaylin for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow instead of taking over for me when I made mistakes.
Journalism isn’t the only thing Kaylin enlightened me about. As the summer went on we got closer as friends instead of just co-workers. I think she saw a lot of herself in me or I was a helpless teenager she felt she needed to train how to live in the real world. Either way, we became friends fast. I look up to her a lot now, there is not a decision I can think of that I would make without calling her for her opinion first.
Along with the title “Mentor” comes the responsibility of teaching me how to enhance my life through life lessons or just simple advice. I started writing down the advice from Kaylin around the end of June and the list will be ongoing forever. I value her opinion because I know she only wants what is best for me and she believes in me. She, being in the business that I aspire to be a part of is able to give me insight on how to charm future employers as well as life tips that I would otherwise have to figure out on my own. Not many people can deal with 19-year-old girls going on about their insignificant daily struggles but she never got annoyed. I
I am going to miss Kaylin SO MUCH. I am already counting down the days until she comes to visit me in Oxford. Love ya sissss!!!
Every day I would write down the advice that Kaylin was giving me. Not only about work but also life in general. I sorted all of the advice into categories; journalism tricks, life tips, relationship and Klassic Kaylin Kuotes.

Don't EVER date someone you work with. "I've done it, it's terrible"
EXCEPTION: You can work at the same place just make sure it is opposite shifts or different departments
Don't date the nice guy until you are ready to appreciate him, or else you will just break their heart
Go on dates and have fun but don't get too attached emotionally if you aren't ready for commitment
Get married to have a life long drinking buddy
Marriage is fun if you find the right man so keep looking and don't rush it
Find some one who balances you out
Find someone who makes you a better person. They must treat their mom, dog and waiters well
